Blood Sugar Balance and Diabetes

Health & Wellness
1:00pm - 2:30pm

Wellness Class with Dr. Danette Sutton According to the Journal of Diabetes Care, it is estimated that the total number of Americans with diabetes will double by 2034. Forty percent of Americans aged 40-74 (41 million people) currently have the condition. This lecture will look at several risk factors, the blood tests to ask your doctor to take for a more comprehensive evaluation, how dairy (even organic dairy) can contribute to Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), and how heavy metals like mercury injures the pancreatic beta cells. As always, we will begin with what is considered "normal," discuss the risk factors, define hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia and their corresponding signs and symptoms. We will also briefly touch on kidney/eye/nerve/heart damage as a result of the disease and side effects of medications used to treat diabetes. We will end with an overview of what exercise, diet and lifestyle can play in creating, and eliminating, the disease. About the Instructor: Dr. Danette L. Sutton is a second generation chiropractor, born and raised in Santa Cruz. She received a BS degree from Santa Clara University in Combined Sciences and her DC degree from the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic in 1984. She was certified as an Applied Clinical Nutritionist in 2015. She has studied extensively in subjects including over one thousand hours in homeopathy, in addition to orthopedics, radiology and nutrition, among many other topics. She has a passion for improving health through chiropractic and nutrition and develops an individualized protocol for each patient. Health comes from the inside-out and this requires more time than simply cutting off a pain signal. Her treatment addresses the underlying condition and not just the symptoms.

Cooking with Wild Seaweeds

Food & Drink
6:00pm - 8:00pm
$40.00

Cooking Demo with Ian O'Hollaren, founder of Seaquoia Wild Seaweeds & Certified Nutrition Consultant Madia Jamgochian Did you know that sea vegetables, also known as seaweeds, are a nutritional powerhouse packed with protein, vitamins and minerals? Rich in iodine, sea vegetables can play an important role in providing thyroid support. Seaweeds are also high in calcium, folic acid and magnesium, as well as iron, potassium, and pantothenic acid. Of the brown variety, arame, hijiki, kelp, kombu and wakame are the most popular. Nori, a red seaweed, is perhaps the most well known variety being a main ingredient in sushi rolls. Studies have shown that sea vegetables have been consumed since at least 8000 B.C.E. by cultures in regions surrounding Japan. Today, however, most people have strayed away from including sea vegetables in their every day diet. This class aims to change that by showing you how to utilize fresh sea vegetables harvested just up the coast from Santa Cruz. Madia and Ian will show you how to whip up 5-6 different recipes using fresh sea vegetables. Come hungry! Sample Menu: Seaweed snacks Kombu Tonic Shooter Miso Soup with Kombu broth and fresh nori Bladderwrack Burger  Fresh Seaweed Salad with sea palm and dwarf rockweed Seaweed coconut ice cream About the Instructors: Ian O’Hollaren combined his knowledge and passion of the ocean and turned it into a business and lifestyle. For almost 2 years, Seaquoia Wild Seaweeds has been harvesting seaweeds from California’s unique and bio-diverse coastal ecosystem. Ian strives to connect people to the source of their food while promoting environmental awareness, which has been his business philosophy from the start! Madia graduated from Bauman College of Holistic Nutrition in 2013 after completing her BA in Environmental Studies and Exercise Sports Science at UCSB. Shortly after, she started her personal nutrition consulting business My Healing Habits. She enjoys educating on how to heal inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, and believes in the food-as-medicine approach.

Nutritional Ketosis and Intermittent Fasting

Health & Wellness
6:00pm - 7:00pm

With Dr. Michelle Bean Fasting is a healing modality that has been used since before the written word. It is only in the past 60 years with the introduction of major marketing efforts by the big food industries and 24 hour mini markets that we have lost sight of fasting as a natural tool for health. The quickest and most efficient method for losing fat and decreasing inflammation is to stop eating (periodically) or reducing your carbohydrate intake. Come learn about Nutritional Ketosis, and Intermittent Fasting. About the Instructor: Dr. Michelle Bean has been guiding people through the ketogenic diet and fasting protocols and has developed an efficient fat-burning starter protocol that includes two weeks of Ketogenic dieting followed by a 3-7 day fast. The fast is optional and can certainly be an intermittent fast.
